Nutrition in
Oncology

One of the great challenges of nutrition is to understand, accompany and treat the oncological patient.

It is well known that this disease is sometimes accompanied by malnutrition even before its diagnosis, as in the case of digestive tract processes (esophagus, stomach, colon, for example), although it is often confused because the disease is installed in previously obese patients. That is why a correct nutritional evaluation is imperative even before starting the corresponding treatment.

There is clear evidence that an altered nutritional status complicates the treatment, increasing the adverse effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and, of course, of any type of surgical procedure.
Let us bear in mind that patients with a recently diagnosed process may even have as associated disadvantages a previous poor diet. It is then that nutritional advice becomes essential from the very beginning.

It is necessary to establish an order of priorities as to what will be privileged during the treatment. Calorie and protein intake is of fundamental importance during this period, and adequate vitamin-mineral supplementation is recommended to avoid complications associated with deficiencies.
If nutrition is insufficient, we currently have associated procedures such as enteral (by tube) or parenteral (by venous catheters) feeding which, if carried out at the right time, can greatly improve the therapeutic outcome.

And when treatment is completed, feeding is scheduled to help prevent resurgence of the disease, according to current evidence.

Our team, consolidated through 30 years of hospital experience, can provide the right advice and accompany these processes with professional quality.
